"Worth doing - it has saved me a lot of time in the long run"
How I did it
I took a class at school (optional) to learn to type. It lasted for 16 weeks meeting every school day for 45 mins. It started off with quite a few exercises which were incredibly dull but helped to train - fff ddd sss aaa jjj kkk lll; teaching you the home row etc. The lessons get (slightly!) more exciting after this getting more complex. The key is practice and repitition - to get your memory used to the position of the keys. The more time you put in, the easier it gets.
I am pleased I learnt to type - it wasn't the most exciting at the time, but it really helped when I did a lot of my coursework at uni as I could type as I thought and I saved so much time by typing quickly. As I did a lot of essays (and now use the computer at work), my typing has got to a good level and is completely natural to me. If you are going to spend a lot of time using a computer, definitely learn to type. It is much better to learn the correct basics to build on them from there.

Tips & Advice
Get a good course as a first step (either in a class or a computer based program) to learn the basics. After this, practice, practice, practice.
Getting faster
I bought a touch type program for my computer, and it was actually pretty cool - I have got to the speed of 15 words per minute. This is a huge improvement, but not yet fast enough for me to type my stories directly onto my computer (I lose my chain of thought as I can't get the words out fast enough!).
I have the technique of how to type, I just need to practice. Once I am fast enough to type my stories directly onto the computer, I will mark this as complete.
