I had the same goal about a year or so ago when I felt I had no real relationship with the people I spent most of my day with. This is what I did - it is a bit of work but it really really worked!!
I set up a spreadsheet with each of my coworkers names on. For each person I listed the key interests and key events in their life, and I made sure I made time to speak to them about their key interests.
I thought of the things I most liked and admired about each person. I took time to really think about this from my heart, and I listed these on the same sheet. I made sure I made 2 - 3 compliments per week. This was a bit embarassing at first as I am not a person accustomed to giving compliments but I was amazed at how effective a truely felt compliment could be in building rapport. I would recommend doing this.
I made an effort to attend work social events and socialise with each team member - even those I wasn't too keen on. I even started asking individuals for a few drinks after work.
This might seem like a lot of work, but for me my work mates became true friends. It turns out they were decent people after all!
