Backpacking with friends

I plan to go backpacking for 6 or 7 months in about a year or so. I have talked about it with one of my best friends and he is keen to come with me. We get on really really well, I am just worried about falling out with him if we were together for such a long period, so I wasn't sure if I should go alone. Has anyone been travelling for a long period of time with a close friend? Did it all work out? What would you recommend?

Hi Doods,

I went travelling a few years ago for just less than one year. I went with one of my best friends and we had the most amazing time.

You will spend a large amount of time together so it really is worth thinking about the following.

Do you have the same objectives? i.e. do you both want to do the same things, see the same places, have the same budget. If so, you could get on great but if not it could lead to tension. It might be worth really thinking about what you want from this trip - i.e. where you want to go, who you would like to meet, the experiences you would like to have and talk honestly about them with your friend. It would only be worth going together if you have the same objectives.

Do you prefer independence and solitude or do you prefer to be around people?

Do you prefer to meet new people or be around people you know?

If you consider all of these points, you should have a better idea of what you want. Talk honestly with your friend to find out what you both want out of this experience.

I hope this helps.
