2 chapters down!

James's picture

I am writing a book with my brother - we have come up with the format (it is going to be 14 chapters in total). I have written the first two chapters, which are in very draft format, and given them to my brother to read through / change / edit.
So, we are getting closer, but still some way to go! I think the key for me is setting a deadline for each chapter and making sure I get at least a very rough draft on which I can build on.

RE: I have a lot of ideas emerging

Hey Nanoradz7 - great you have a lot of ideas coming up (I could do with some of them myself!). I wouldn't worry too much if some other people have written on the same theme - I would say if it is an idea you love, go for it. Your imagination is unique, as is your writing style, and as your book develops I think you will have a very different concept to those other books. Go for it!

I have a lot ideas emerging

I have a lot ideas emerging on various topics; at times I see some of them in print by others. It is high time I overcome the block and started writing expressing my creativity to the fullest.

Time to start on my book idea

Jacko's picture

Since doing my creative writing course, I have been writing regularly, however I have not attempted to write a book - I have just had a idea that I felt was good enough. It is true that the more you write, the more ideas come to you. Over the last couple of weeks, I have had an idea for the book which I have begun to develop, putting some of the ideas down on paper and setting out a brief plan. So, I guess I am ready to start! The problem is, I am not really sure how to start, but if I learnt anything from my creative writing course, it is that I should just write, and let the ideas flow. I can always come back and edit at a later date.
I will start this tomorrow!

Creative writing course

James's picture

I have recently completed 'The Complete Creative Writing Course', held in Soho, London. The course lasted for 8 weeks for a few hours a week and it went through the basics of starting to write a book - how to structure, writing styles and techniques etc.
These learnings were moderately helpful, but the single most useful thing I learnt was that to write a book, you simply have to dedicate time to writing. Take a book / notepad with you everywhere and just write whenever you have the opportunity. It doesn't really matter what you write about - anything. The key is to let the words flow out of you and not worry too much about how good it is, how it is structured - you can come back to edit later.
So if you have an idea for a story or book, simply start writing and let the words flow out of you. You can always come back and edit and restructure at a later time.

First step

After setting my goal to write a book a few days ago, I have made my first step and booked a creative writing course near me, starting in 3 weeks (this is the earliest start I could find). It is 4 hours every Saturday for 8 weeks - and I am sure I will have plenty of assignments to keep me busy between classes. I am really looking forward to it now.

Found my idea!

I set the goal to write a book just over a year ago, and at the time didn't have a story in mind, and had little idea of where to start. I attended a creative writing course which really just taught me that if you want to write, you have to write every day about anything you can - this will start to get you in the creative mindset and will help ideas to flow out of you.

So, after the course, I did just that - write about everything and everything - for at least half an hour a day.

I had an idea for a book a couple of months ago and have been focusing on writing that ever since. I am really enjoying it! I aim to have this finished by the end of the year.

Need a start!

I have an idea for a story, but have no idea where to start. I have made several different starts already but none of them seem quite right!

I have a trash bin next to my desk which is getting quite full. I am going to keep cracking at this for the rest of the day, and I am confident I will have the right starting point by the time I finish!

My first book

Jasey's picture

I have always enjoyed writing, and over the last few years have dedicated a few hours a week to writing short stories, writing about my feelings, my experiences - anything really. It was not hard for me to dedicate time as I love doing this.

While I was running the other day, I came up with a great idea for a book (novel) and now I want to write this - hence the goal to write a book. Although I have written a lot, I have never attempted to write a full novel, and I must admit the prospect is quite scarey!

I am going to dedicate 10 hours a week to writing this book, and will update my progress here.

Initial thoughts

Jacko's picture

Ok, I have set the goal to write a book, something I have wanted to do for a long time. I haven't got a definite idea of what I want to write about though, but I don't want this to stop me! I am thinking along the following lines at the moment....

- a book on various different subjects and ideas, based on ideas from my diaries
- blog books - I used to blog a lot, and I could turn the content of this into a book - I know a lot of people use this a basis of their book...

Like I said, nothing definite yet, but plan to have a brainstorming session to come up with a couple of other ideas...

i have the same goal and wonder why i keep procrastinating. someone sent me a definition of procrastination that went something like: fear of succeeding and fear of failing combined.
I tend to agree that this might come into it/

There are many way to write a book and I have to find the one that suits me best even if it means outsourcing much of the work..

I support you in your goal.

kind regards

Write my book

JK's picture

I've always wanted to write my own book, but I have often thought that I will do it 'when I have more time', or 'when I have more money'.
However, I have come to the realisation that these times may never arrive, so it is time to start writiing my book now. I am going to move this goal so that it is a top priority for me now.
