"I don't claim to have seen all I wanted it, but my gap year gave me a great start!"
How I did it
I have always wanted to travel to broaden my horizons and know more about the world I live in, and the people who share it with me.
After Uni, I took a gap year to do some work abrI took a gap year after high school to do volunteer work abroad. For me, this is a great way of travelling when you don't have much money, as the organisation will often pay for your accomodation and food, and will sometimes cover your travel expenses and even pay a salary (especially in the case of teaching English overseas). I did some volunteer work, and I also did some work as an au pair in places as diverse as France, UK, Manilla, Honduras, Guatemala, Shanghai and a bit of Germany. Like I said in the title, I still have a lot more I want to see, but I am proud of my adventures to date and I feel like I have made a good start! My next step is to try living abroad for a longer period of time - perhaps in a European country when I can learn a new language.

Tips & Advice
It is a little scary to make the decision to go travel, at least it was for me, but I figured if I didn't take the plunge and go for it I may regret it for the rest of my life.
When you are out there, it is really helpful to get a good travel book. This is really great for pointing out the main areas of interest, and it is well worth getting these some time before you go so you can plan your movements in advance.
Also, don't be afraid to get integrate with locals and mix with them as much as possible. Some of my most memorable experiences are with some local people who I could barely understand!
Mostly, if you are thinking of doing this, take the jump and do it - it will really expand your mind.
What a worthy goal
I have always wanted to do this, and now I am making it a definite goal - if I don't do something about making it happen it may just slip by!
I am starting to save some money to be able to do this - I estimate £5,000 should be a good start, enough to get me some tickets and a some travelling money. I plan to work as I travel, so that I can pay the basics without using too much of my savings.
I want to have done this by the end of 2011.
