"Hard - but worthwhile!"
How I did it
I was quite a heavy smoker, smoking at least a pack a day and sometimes 2 for over 5 years. Some of my friends were trying to quit, and they persuaded me to go to a stop smoking class at the local heath center. I would recommend going to these, as they gave us free patches, advice and you can meet other people who also want to quit. They made us all do a test - which was blowing into a machine which measures the amount of carbon monoxide in your lungs and I had the highest in the class. I was shocked when I found this out and it really hit me - I knew from this point I would have to quit or there may be serious consequences later in my life. So, I went to the class with little real intention to quit, and left knowing I had to!
I used patches for a couple of weeks, but then began to forget about them and naturally stoped using them.
I still had a strong physical habit of wanting something in my hand and month so did collapse and smoke a couple of times. Man, the first few days were really hard - I tell you much more than I was expecting - but after 6 or seven days my cravings got less and it was a little easier - I felt like a new person!
Now, I find it hard to believe I used to smoke - I feel so please not to rely on them like I used to! I am no longer a slave to cigarettes - and it feels great - you don't have to be either!

Tips & Advice
Sometimes the craving to have a cigarette in my hand and mouth was very strong - and at these times I used a bic pen with no ink in to put to my mouth (it is about the same diameter as a cigarette). It may sound really strange, but I could pretend like this was a cigarette and it really helped.
Time to quit!
I also been a heavy smoker for some years and I want to set my goal to quit and live happily without cigarettes. They are obviously damaging my health and they cost me a fortune.
I have set my goal to stop smoking - this goal will be complete when I haven't smoked a cigarette for one year!
