"Exhilarating!"
How I did it
I started by calling up a Surf School, based on Noosa Beach, which did lessons for beginners. I booked in with a mate for the full week - 5 days surfing and accommodation, and we had surf lessons every day. They were really great. The ran us through heaps of drills and technique stuff then they eased us out onto the water. It took a little while to get the hang of it, but I was standing by the end of the first day, and then I just built on it over the rest of the week. After we could surf a bit (couple of days), they let us take out the shorter boards so we could hit the bigger stuff further out.

Tips & Advice
Be prepared to work hard - it is tiring as every time you come back to shore you have to fight your way back out to sea against all the crashing waves!
Also, wear sunscreen!
I had my first experience today
And it was amazing! I had one lesson and stayed out there an hour after my lesson finished. I didn't manage to stand up (except for a nanosecond!), but I still had the most amazing time riding the wave in whilst lying down on the surfboard. I had such a feeling of freedom when I was doing this - like nothing else existed.
I am definitely going to learn to do this properly - I can just imagine how awesome this would be if I could stand up!
