"Intensive is exhausting - but the only way for me!"
How I did it
I started doing lessons once a week, and found that I wasn't really getting anywhere as there was too much time between lessons and I didn't do as much practice as I should have done.
I decided to sign up for an intensive Spanish course, and it was massively intensive - I went to class for four days a week for two hours, after work, from 7 to 9pm. The course lasted a total of 4 weeks, during which time I had 15 lessons (30 hours).
To be honest, after finishing on most nights I was really tired and it doesn't leave time for much else in your life.
Given the intensity of the course, we managed to cover all the basics, including all tenses (past, present, future), a lot of grammar. Obviously I have a lot left to learn, but in terms of the basics I feel that I have a pretty good grounding thanks to this course.

Tips & Advice
I think intensive learning really is the only way - otherwise you tend to forget what were learnt in earlier lessons and if you don't practice right away you will lose it.
I think complete immersion in a Spanish speaking environment would be the best way to learn, but if you are not able to do this book yourself in for intensive lessons!
Intercambio
I have moved back to London recently after 2 months of intensive Spanish classes, and my Spanish is suffering! I really don't want to lose what I learnt, so need to find some people willing to do intercambio (english - spanish exchange) in London!
