I have been in an intensive Spanish class in Spain for a month now, and I think I have picked up a lot (but still not as fluent as I imagined I would be!)
I do 4 hours of lessons everyday, with about an hour extra study, and I try and speak with friends / housemates in Spanish for at least one hour a day.
I am actually loving it, and could see that I could easily be getting really good if I stayed here immersed in the language for just a few more months...

Thanks JK for the interest! I just started 2 weeks ago, and the two classes have been great so far. The thing is that I have to keep working between classes, this is key for me - especially the verbs!

How are the classes going??

I booked on a 20 hour intensive course at Enforex school in central Madrid, and had my first 4 hours today. I have had a few Spanish lessons before, and I started at one of the lowest levels, so I found today fairly easy. That said, it is all so basic, I feel a mile away from being able to have a conversation with a local!
I am staying in a house with a couple of Spanish guys, and I am barely able to communicate with them at all - very frustrating, this wasn't as easy as I had first thought it would be.

I have made various attempts to learn Spanish before by taking lessons in the evenings, but never made as much progress as I would have liked. I had pretty much come to the conclusion that the only way to learn Spanish well was to immerse myself in the language and culture.
An opportunity recently came up for me to take a couple of months off, and i decided to move to Madrid and focus on learning the language - it was the perfect opportunity to achieve this goal.
I have been here a week now and have sorted accomodation and a course, the first steps done!

I'm off to Madrid for a couple of months, it will be a great chance to improve my language skills

I took the plunge and booked some lessons, I am really not progressing fast enough without them.
They at 2 hours every week starting in January. I already know a bit, so I put myself in elementary level class rather than beginner (may be ambitious). I will make sure learn as much as possible before I take these classes, then practice in between.
I am actually quite looking forward to them now.

I have now finished all levels of the linkwords program, and it is really cool - my vocab has increased enormously. That said, my grammar is still at a very basic level, as is my verbs and my conversational ability. I have a good basis, but now I need to step it up a level and improve grammar, reading, writing and listening.
I have thought about the best way to do this, and I think I will start to read childrens books - I know the vocabulary so it should be fairly easy to pick up sentence structuring from here.
I have been told there are a lot of opportunities for intercambio - where I can exchange languages with a native Spanish speaker. I am going to find some of these and get involved!
