"Fantastic - hard work well rewarded"
How I did it
For me, the key to playing the piano well is practice and dedication. In order to practice and dedicate as much as it needed, it is important that you really are motivated to learn to play.
I went to a piano concerto and was really inspired to reach a high level on this instrument, but it didn't seem possible given I could only play the most basic of tunes.
So I committed to learning, got weekly lessons and practiced daily. I worked hard to ensure I could play every note without thinking, cementing it in my memory to the point that I could play it in my mind.
As you get better, there will be challenges to overcome. Personally, I was stuck on a circle of fifths and just couldn't get my fingers to move fast enough. But eventually I got through it through practice, practice and more practice. It really does make the difference when learning to play the piano.

Tips & Advice

A year more to grade 1?
I have been playing for lessons, and as I want to push myself to learn I have decided to go through the grade route, building up from 1 to 8.
I have had lessons over the last 10 weeks (1 lesson every week), and I am really enjoying them and since I am practicing a lot, I am improving loads!
However, I have been told it may take me another year to get to grade one (apprarantly it takes on average about 2 years, so although I will be quicker than this it is still a long time!).
I intend to get my grade 1 by November 2011.
