Loving this now!
It can take a while to get the hang of it, but it really can become fun when you start to master your first songs. I have learnt to play a few songs, and am having a lot of fun - I am playing for friends and family and sometimes have sing alongs!
It did take a while to learn to play songs well, but it is so worth hanging in there until you get there. I have only learnt to play very basic songs (actually, these are some of the easiest to learn) including the following famous ones:
Wonderwall - Oasis
Talkin About a Revolution - Tracy Chapman
One - U2.
Not improving quickly enough....
I have come a long way since I started, I am playing a lot of my favourite tunes, but I am still not playing them as fluently as I would like - and I certainly can't play a song by ear or looking at the music without a lot of time.
I know I haven't been playing that long, so shouldn't expect so much, but the key for my improvement is practice.
I have set my goal to practice for at least one hour three times a week for the next year (see plan). I am sure at the end of a year doing this I will be the standard I want to be.
Getting there
I have been playing the guitar for about a year now, and although sometimes I think the progress is slow, I have really come a long way considering I didn't even know to play a chord just over a year ago!
For me, lessons are essential. I have had one group lesson a week and have been most weeks over this period, and it is great to have something to work towards every week - it motivated me to practice every week.
When practicing I have used various guitar books (beatles is my favourite) and learnt some songs through videos from youtube.
I have a long way to go before I am as good as I want to be, so this is still going to be my goal for a while yet.
Starting out
My brother gave me his old guitar when I told him I want to learn, which is great - saves me trying to buy one anyway...
He has shown me some of the basics which I have been practicing a lot over the past week - actually a couple of hours a day. I didn't expect to do this much, but I am really enjoying it!
Another thing I didn't expect was the pain involved - my left hand (the fingertips) are really hurting from all the practice!
My brother also gave me a book with some lessons, scales etc which was really useful in my practice.
I have also been using Songsterr which goes through all the begining guitar tabs.
My first lesson
I am learning the guitar - and had my first lesson yesterday - I really enjoyed it. The teacher was great, definitely knows what he is talking about and has a great teaching style. I really appreciated that he explains the reasons behind what he teaches rather than just telling me to play notes. I look forward to continuing!
Learn to play guitar
I used to play when I was younger (when I was about 10 years old) and I used to love it.
I was round a friends house the other day and he was playing the guitar and singing, and I had a massive desire to learn for myself.
I intend to learn to play the guitar to a good standard within the next year.
