"A long but exciting road!"
How I did it
I first started learning French in high school, and really fell in love with the language. Unfortunately, I stopped learning for many years, and by the time I began to focus on this goal I had forgotten most of what I had learnt so had to start from the basics again.
I took French courses at the Alliance Francaise for 3 years and slowly progressed to a fairly good level. I am not yet fluent, but I feel this would only come to me if and when I live in a French speaking country.
I am currently (very slowly!) reading through the Harry Potter in French, which is great as I alrady have a good idea of the stories having read them already in English.
I have also started listening to some French bands and it was really satisfying to note that I am starting to understand what they are talking about.

Tips & Advice
Stick at it is my biggest advice. If your road to learning is anything like mine, there will be many times when you don't feel like you are getting anywhere and you simply want to quit. However, keep at it - I can guarantee you are learning, and you will never regret working through it.
Good luck everyone!
Linkwords....done!
I have completed the Linkwords programme - levels 1 - 4, and they have been awesome for learning vocab.
Basically, they link each word to a visual image, and it is really easy to remember - I can confidently say I remember all of the words which were taught to me on that course.
That said, the course does not teach much in terms of verbs and sentence structuring - but I feel with the vocab I have it is a great start. I still need to improve my speaking, listening and reading ability, but I have made a good start.
