How I did it

I had been working in finance for many years, but really wanted to be involved in child education. I was into my 30s when I decided to make the move, and I got into the education sector in a non-teaching role, when I realised that I really wanted to be a teacher. I investigated all my options, and the best one for me was to go for a work-based route where I could work as an unqualified teacher and train on the job. It was very competitive to get a place on this scheme, and the first time I applied I did not get through, the reason being that I had too little experience. To be able to get this position, I knew I would have to get more experience and so I had to become a classroom assistant for a term. This was enjoyable, and it gave me great experience, but gave me far less money than I was used to, and it was a struggle in this regard. That said, I am really happy I made the leap and went for it as on my second application I made it, and spent a year training. I am happy to say that I have recently got my first full teaching post and am loving it. It is so much more rewarding than my past career, and I am so happy I made the move.

Tips & Advice Work out what you want to do, and do everything to make it happen. If you are changing career, you may have to make a backward step, but it is very much worth it if it will get you where you want to be. So go for it - it is never too late to start!

How I did it

I was living just outside London and doing a number crunching job which I found incredibly boring. I knew I had to do something about it, but didn't exactly know what.
After a lot of thought and agonising, I finally handed in my notice to work and moved to Spain.
This was quite an extreme measure, and I am sure it is not for everyone. I had a pretty good level of Spanish, which helped a lot, a Spanish boyfriend and a few Spanish friends. All this made the move a lot easier, but it was still pretty terrifing all the same.
My initial intention was to teach English while I looked for another job, which I did. I applied for a lot of work but had no success - not even getting to the interview stage.
After a few months (!) of searching and getting nowhere, I got a call out of the blue with regards to a wedding planning job, working with English speaking couples who want to get married in Spain. I had always wanted to work in Wedding planning, but the jobs are so tough to come by that I was over the moon when I finally got offered the position.
So, the upside is I am a wedding planner and live in Madrid, my favourite city in the world!

Hold out for what you want. I paid the rent whilst waiting for the right job by teaching English.

In search of my dream job

Although specifically I don't know, I do have a few ideas... I think I would be a great boss - I work hard, I work well with others and I think I would be good a motivating others, and very fair.
When I think of what I would be doing, I see myself giving presentations in meetings, using creative skills. If I had something I loved, I wouldn't care too much about money, enough to good living would be fine.
I guess I know some things that I want, but not entirely sure how to get from where I am now to there.
I am going to spend a lot of time researching jobs to find out what would be best suited to me. When I find an area I think I could be interested in I think I will just go for it.

Don't give up. Hold out for what you want. If you believe you can get something and work hard enough at it, you will. Don't listen to other people, this is your dream and you alone are responsible for making it happen.

Get out there and network. Find out the people who work in this industry and make sure you get out there and speak to them. Email people in the positions you want and ask them to spare some time for a coffee - it may suprise you but it is rare they will say no. So many good positions are given this way, and are not advertised at all.
Build your skill set. Find out what skills you need, and do everything you can to build them and to make sure you can demonstrate them.

Have a job I love

On December 18th, 2008 Churchy says:

I have a job, but I don't really love it.
After all, we spend most of our lives at work - and what kind of life would I be leading if I was doing something which didn't fulfill me?
I have come to the decision that I will find a job I love.
