Getting Promoted
I starrted at my current job about 3 years ago. At the time i wasn't too serious about my job and was seen as the office clown. Since I started settings goals on here it has made me think about my current position. I've set a goal to get promoted in the next 6 months but i'm finding it hard to lose my joker image. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can move towards promotion? |

You have already made the first step to getting a promotion by making it a goal. I don't think you need to change your complete approach. If it was me I would change my approach from joker to enthusiastic. Still be someone every one talks to and have a laugh with as being able to make people laugh and get on with people is a great asset. After a couple of weeks arrange to have a meeting with your manager and advise him that you would like to progress your career within the company. Ask for his/ her advice on the how you need to change your attitude and ask if there is a progression scheme. You will find a lot of companies do have schemes to develop internal staff. Try and get your manager on side. Make sure you are dressed correctly and in on time. Seem keen to take on new tasks and enthusiastic to learn. I hope this helps..
Ian, the first thing I would say is you have some great advice there!
In my experience your boss is key to your promotion. I'll assume you are not trying to take his job and will be looking to be promoted to some other role. It will be your boss that will decide who to promote or at the least who to put forward! I'd recommend a couple of things here, firstly as recommended above talk to him about where you want to go - you won't get it unless you ask. Second you have been there three years so must have built up some knowledge (other than how to best trick Dave from accounting) try and share that with co-workers - it's hard to get promoted if you are ireplaceable!
If it's possible try and take on some of the responsibility of the role you are aiming for - if it is anything like my place you have to almost be doing the job before they give it to you!
Good luck!
