Becoming debt free

JZ's picture

When I started this goal, I was embarressed to write that I was almost £15k in debt. Since then, I have paid off £8k - which is pretty awesome, less than £7k left!
I am starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel, and I have paid off £8k despite there having to buy a new bike (which cost about £1,000). With that in mind, I could have this goal complete by the end of the year!
If I finish getting out of debt and just focus on saving money, I will be worth quite a bit in a few short years!

Debt is decreasing - not far now

Ross's picture

When I set this goal I set up automatic payments for my debt as soon as I got paid (this ensured that I didn't ever see it, so couldn't spend it!).
Since then I have got a pay rise, so I have increased the amount I am paying off by the full rise, and it is moving quite quickly. I still have £7k to pay off in total, which although it sounds a lot is a massive improvement on my previous situation. I will be debt free within the next year. A great feeling!

Making great progress

JZ's picture

I have completed a quick review of my debt situation, and I am making great progress. Since starting this goal in February I have paid off over £5k of debt, which is just above my target, so I am feeling very positive about this. It has been tight over the last few months, as I have cut out a lot of the unnecessary expenditure that got me into this mess!
Anyway, it was all really worth it now that I have seen the progress. At this rate, I could be debt free in about a year!

Keep at it!

Well done mate - this is a worthy goal. I am sure you will love having all that debt off your back - hold in there - you can do it!

Changing cards

Perc1's picture

I had a £6k balance on a tesco credit card which was being paid at 25% APR - they were really screwing me on interest!
A friend recommended that there are a lot of cards which allow balance transfers with a period of 0% interest - I simply transferred my balance off the Tesco card and moved it to the new card (mine was egg but there are a load of providers which offer this).

I still have to pay this balance off obviously, but it useful not to get stung for interest in the period where I am not able to pay any off!

I hope this helps if you are in a similar situation.

Starting to become debt free

JZ's picture

I am getting quite heavily in debt - mainly due to my credit cards and inability to stop spending on them!
I have made the commitment to get myself out of debt - whatever it takes.
As a first step, I have cut up all my cards - I will no longer spend money I don't have.
I have set up a budget in excel which calculates what I earn and I have put in a budget for my monthly expenses, which I will not exceed. I will pay the minimum on each card and all the rest of my money will pay off my cards in the order of expense, as below:
1. Overdraft (20% APR)
2. Mint Credit Card (6.9% APR)
3. M&S Credit Card (3.9% APR)
4. Barclaycard (3.9% APR)
5. Virgin Credit Card (0% APR)
I have worked out that with my current income and expenditure, it will take me 2 years, which is slightly demoralising but definitely worth doing - I figure the sooner I start, the sooner I will become debt free!

Get out of debt!

Ross's picture

I have a lot of debt hanging over me from my University days and I feel that it is about time that I got rid of it!
I don't know what exactly it is I spend my money on as I have little to show for it, but I seem to spend whatever I earn.
I am now going to focus on what I spend and ensure I allocate at least 30% of my incoming monthly money to paying off my debt.
