Tying my happiness to a goal

Nai's picture

In my last post, I decided to tie my happiness to a goal, following the recommendation of Einstein himself. I have set up a few goals in my life which have some meaning for me - saving money (essential to my future happiness!), reading more (I have always loved to read) and spending more time with my family and the people I love.
I have to admit, working towards these goals do make me very happy and are giving me more meaning in my life. I think my next goal will relate to what I do with my life on a day to day basis (my work), as I think working towards a career that I love will bring me a lot of happiness.

Happiness tied to a goal

Einstein said "if you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.”

I really want happiness, but in the past I have tied to boyfriends, relying on them to make me happy, to make me feel complete. The problem with this is that when I was with someone, I was so scared that they would leave me, that I would be on my own, that I couldn't be happy.

I think if I am to be happy, I need to define a goal which would really inspire me, and work towards it with all my heart.

Thankful for what I have

“We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we don't have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.”
I saw this quote the other day, and it made me think that happiness is all about appreciating what we have now. It is fine to want other things, as it is natural to develop and move towards goals, but we must really appreciate what we have now.
I am going to make a list now of everything I have in my life which makes me grateful, and spend some time every day to contemplate this list, and add anything to it which comes to mind. (I have created a plan to this effect).

In pursuit of happiness

I am going to be very deciplined about this, as I think that is what it will take. When I catch myself thinking a negative thouht, or something which doesn't make me happy, I am going to stop - an that is it. I am going to let the negative thought just float away, like a ballon. I am going to release all thoughts which are bringing me down.
